abstract

  • Milk fat contains saturated fatty acids that are considered unhealthy for the human consumer. Excess protein nutrition in the dairy cow is associated with poor reproductive success. Analysis of gene expression in livestock is critical to determining ways to enhance the value of milk and to improve reproductive success ultimately, enhancing economic opportunities for agricultural producers. Identifying the regulation of the key genes involved in these economically important aspects of animal agriculture requires instrumentation capable of quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) measurement. Analysis of gene expression will aid our understanding to produce healthier milk and improve reproduction. This instrumentation request will improve the Nation's nutrition and health by producing milk with less saturated fatty acids. Further, more successful reproduction will enhance profitability and sustainability of the dairy industry.
