Cyfar Idaho 4-H Afterschool Outreach to At-Risk Communities
The CYFAR Idaho 4-H Afterschool Outreach to At-Risk Communities identified the following situations in each community. Bonners Ferry, Boundary County has a free/reduce lunch rate for 4 elementary schools averaging 68 percent. The gap in scoring proficient in language and math widens between 3rd and 6th grade. forty-seven percent of 7th graders are not proficient in science. Twenty-four percent of population is under 18 years. The unemployment rate was 12 percent in fall 2009. Potlatch, Latah County has 60 percent free/reduce lunch rate at the elementary school. Thirty-four percent of 4th graders are not proficient in language and 25 percent not proficient in math. Forty-six percent of 7th graders are not proficient in science. The largest industry in area began layoffs in early 2009 with no plan to re-hire due to economy. There is a documented
increase in negative behavior in schools and in families. The 2 elementary schools that serve Farmway Village, Caldwell, Canyon County has a free/reduce lunch rate that ranges from 72-92 percent. English is s second language for children in the village. Language test scores are below proficient for low-income ESL students and are math and science scores. The unemployment rate is at 12% in Canyon County.
