Plant and Soil Test Calibration for Irrigated Crops in Southern Idaho
Crop residues are important for nitrogen cycling. A better understanding of their net N contribution to subsequent crops will enable more accurate N fertilizer recommendations that would in turn reduce the potential for nitrate contamination of ground waters. Information is needed especially for alfalfa seed, sweet corn, and mint residues. This project examines the relative contributions of available N to subsequent crops from residues of sweet corn vs field corn, alfalfa seed vs alfalfa forage, and spent mint hay.
