Genetic Algorithms and their Application to Study of Microbial Consortia Grant uri icon



  • We lack a basic understanding at the genetic level of many processes of importance to agriculture such as carbon sequestration and nitrogen fixation that are carried out by mixed microbial communities. We will examine microbiological processes of importance to agriculture at the genetic level by the use of genetic algorithms to construct specific types of highly interactive microbial communities optimized to perform the processes under study (e.g., nitogren fixation). This is a new approach to the study of agricultural systems and in the field of microbial ecology in general.
