Improving Calculations for Water Consumption by Irrigated Agriculture
Evapotranspiration (ET) coefficients vary from field to field for the same crop type and they also vary with frequency of wetting by irrigation and precipitation. A full surface energy balance based on satellite images can provide field scale ET over large areas, but at large expense in time and labor. High resolution (60 m) thermal imagery from satellite is becoming more rare with the demise of the thermal-equpped Landsat system. This project will develop simple, rapid techniques for spatial mapping of ET that use only short-wave bands more commonly available on satellites and anticipated on the next generation NPOESS satellite systems.
