Biotechnology Optimization for Biofuels Production
Our proposed project seeks to optimize algal lipid production for use in the current algal biofuel initiative related to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. The Act seeks increased availability and use of economically feasible biofuels in the US by the year 2020. A recent research summit on algal biofuels (National Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap, 2010) mentioned several research and development challenges related to this type of biofuel, among them in the area of feedstock development, the optimization of algal fuel precursors (lipids) in addition to development of high throughput screening technologies. This proposal will address both of these areas of needed research. Outcomes of the proposed research include "recipes" of cultural requirements to maximize lipid content of algae in addition to specific algal species that when
put together in a consortia will produce further higher quantities of algal lipids. The benefit of such research is to increase the likelihood of developing real, timely sources of renewable fuels.
