Land Effects: Peristence Exotic Forbs in Sagebrush Steppe: are Loss of Foundation Species/disruption Soil Resource Partitioning Causal Links? Grant uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • The most widespread land uses in semiarid shrublands and grasslands have promoted the spread and persistence of a large suite of forbs from Europe and Eurasia. These exotic forbs share traits such as taproots that point to their potential reliance on increases in deep soil water that occur when agro-ecosystems are disturbed in ways that select against native deep-rooted species. Our purpose is to determine the extent to which changes in deep soil water following land use disturbances promote the success of exotic forb populations.
