Overview

abstract

  • Improved models of tree- and canopy-level crown dynamics will enable better predictions of inter-tree competition and spatial canopy structure. These in turn will lead to better predictions of forest stand growth and response to disturbances such as fire and windthrow, and the timing, distribution, and quantity of snowmelt. We will develop an improved model using detailed measurements of crown dimensions and existing process-based models of crown dynamics, and test these models at the tree and stand level using statistical tests of equivalence.
