Street Deployment of Pedestrian Smart Signals
This project is the second year of research on smart signals that addresses issues of safety on access for an underserved population of intersection users. The improvements are concentrated in areas of improved operation of the countdown pedestrian signal and safer access for blind or mobility impaired pedestrians. The operation of the countdown timer makes the crosswalk safer by displaying correct time information when traffic signal timing changes. Giving blind and mobility-impaired pedestrians assistance in accessing the pedestrian button and orientation helps them cross intersections more safely and efficiently. The goal of this phase of the smart signals research is to implement the a smart signals pedestrian control and remote access pedestrian button in a TS1 cabinet that would be deployable at the 6th Street and Deakin Avenue intersection in Moscow, Idaho.
