Commercialization and Field Distribution of Smart Pedestrian Call Signals Grant uri icon

Overview

abstract

  • This project is in its third year of research on Smart Signals Technology, which addresses issues of safety and access for an underserved population of intersection users/pedestrians with disabilities. The capabilities of the technology described here will assist all users of an intersection, by transforming the intersection into a networked control center, capable of advanced detection and communication. Previous work to validate Smart Signals concepts will be refined during this project to satisfy standards for manufacturing and deployment, and to address feedback given by the Smart Signals Technology Advisory Board. This project represents a crucial next phase in the technology’s development: to address specifications for functionality, and installation, maintenance and configuration issues. Toward the end of this project, the technology will be ready for deployment and assessment in the field, representing a major milestone in the research to develop a revolutionary system of safety and access for pedestrians at traffic intersections.
