abstract

  • This project will result in an extended architecture or system for distributed traffic control, integrating NTCIP-compliant traffic controllers. In addition, improvements will be made to existing capabilities to resolve queue spillback problems at intersections where the problem originates. First, methods for automatically sensing queue spillback and its cause will be developed. Second, methods for automatically responding to the queue spillback will be developed. All of the methods developed will be tested in situations where only a common detection configuration is used and only NTCIP 1202 compliant communications are used. Technical products of this research will include microcontroller-capable software that will establish the architecture and implement the most promising methods for sensing queue spillback and for determining an appropriate response
