Thesis (M.S., Mechanical Engineering) -- University of Idaho, 2017 | Students involve in CDS competitions and engine lab research need to configure engine test equipment and implement protocols for meeting competition rules and/or federal regulations. In this process students will modify fuel and ignition parameters across an operational band. This thesis inventories and details web based test procedures for medium scale two and four-stroke engine calibration and testing strategies. Procedures include lab specific set ups, SAE standard tests, and ChemKin models to guide selection of initial operating parameters. These resources coupled with proper use of equipment allows the user to produce data regarding brake specific emissions, fuel consumption, power, and EPA E-score. Sentence about system repeatability. The online resources are assessed via focus group consisting of new and experienced users involved in the 2016 CSC to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.
