Recording Project: Twentieth Century Master Piano Sonata by Bartok and Prokofiev
University of Idaho Seed Grant
The objective of this project is to record two Twentieth century master piano sonatas by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok and Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Both composers succeeded in presenting new musical concepts in a very traditional framework. Their piano sonatas are fairly well known works, but the younger generation pianists do not tend to record them because of their difficulty and complexity.
If funding is granted, I will work with Blue Griffin Recording, one of the most successful classical music labels these days. Blue Griffin has agreed to distribute the final CD recording widely among universities, music organizations, and public libraries. In addition, the label will make it available online.
In 2005,1 won First Prize in the International Bartok-Prokofiev Piano Competition in Italy. Subsequent performances included my debut recital in Carnegie Hall and lectures at a number of universities. If this project receives funding, it will not only strengthen my research productivity but also provide me the opportunity to connect with more people in my area nationally and internationally.
This project will help establish me as a specialist of both composers which will provide credibility in recruiting for the University of Idaho and enhance my profile toward tenure.
