Darren A Thompson Adjunct Chemistry Professor & Director of Peptidaho Research Consortium

Positions

At the U of I CDA Harbor Center I occupy a small part of an interdisciplinary scientific research laboratory. Porous silica chromatography, coordinated by John Wieser, provides a second area of chemistry research. Peptidaho concentrates on peptide based biomedical research. Naively, peptides can be thought of as small proteins, as both are polymers of amino acids, but peptides are so much richer than relegation to a subset of important bio-active compounds, inhabiting unique functions as signaling hormones, structural molecules, and bio-engineering scaffolds.

research overview

  • I have expertise in chemical protein synthesis with more than 35 published articles indexed by the National Library of Medicine ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/darren%20a.thompson.1/bibliography/public/ )and over 7000 citations in Google Scholar ( https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=tVFUbcUAAAAJ&hl=en ). In 2016, after five and a half years at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, I founded Peptidaho as a training center for young people to funnel them into University science programs by educating them in basic, useful laboratory skills. Some really smart people at the University of Idaho saw the potential benefit of my contribution and named me Affiliate to the Faculty of Chemistry. In my post-doctoral research training program I synthesized a novel protein fluorescent labeling reagent chemoselectively targeting the arginine guanidine functional group, cy3-TPG, for millipore-sigma. At UCSC, while in graduate school, I helped decipher much of the melanocortin system biology associated with positive energy balance. While a scientist at Gryphon Sciences, in the late 1990s, I assisted in the development of NNY-RANTES, a potent microbicide halting HIV-1 infection. If you have a research project, funded or not, that depends on a synthetic peptide, please contact me!
