Video-Based Method for the Detection of Truck Axles
Protection of Idaho's roadways and bridges depends upon compliance with weight regulations by the trucking industry. Compliance is currently monitored through inspections at Ports of Wentry and by the use of mobile enforcement units. However, given the geographic size of the State and the number of State highway miles, more cost-effective methods are needed for estimating complilance rates and encourating voluntary compliance. Ideally, a monitoring system would perform "weigh-in-motion" classification of axle configuration and vehicle identifcation, then communicate violations to the driver of the truck and to the Idaho Transportation Department. However, current technology makes a system cost prohibitive, limiting the number of installations that would be feasible.
